VICTORIAN STAIRWELL
An exercise in baking trim textures
Inspired by Hugo Beyer's texturing work in The Order 1886. I decided to make a quick modular scene with special emphasis on baking and using ColourIDs. Although this scene was made for an animated short, its mesh economy and texturing practices are closer to what is seen in games than film.

I modeled this scene from a variety of extreme camera shots drawn by the Art Director, Brian Lemay. While measurements had to be close to real-world scale, some concessions had to be made in order to get shots exactly as shown in concept.

Because I work remotely, Substance's implementation of Sketchfab allows me to quickly and easily send the Art Director interactive scenes for revisions. The lighting was baked using 3DSMax's RTT and is plugged into self-illumination as Sketchfab's lighting is extremely limited for anything besides smaller assets. |
A tiling trim set. This one contains the wainscotting, baseboards, mouldings, door jambs, and ornate panels. I went with grapevines, moon, and anemone motifs because I thought they fit the murder mystery genre this scene was made for. Grapevines and fruits are meant to symbolize rumors and forbidden/dangerous knowledge. In some cultures, anemones are said to ward off malicious intent. |
